Home-based Holidays Ideas During and After Pandemic

Jun 29, 2020

Introduction

It has been two months since we have been trying to practice the new ‘normal’ in breaking the chain of Covid-19. With the start of the conditional MCO on 4th May 2020, parents are gradually resuming back to work while the little ones still need to be at home. In fact, we will be spending less time at home. Hence, to keep our kids entertained during this conditional period, here are five home-based holidays ideas which we can practice during our days off while protecting our family, by staying at home!

1. In House Camping

If you do not have a tent, no worries! Use a large blanket as your tent, decorate it with fairy lights, and play ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ song to create the forest ambience. Then, enjoy some camping snacks such as grilled chicken and baked corns. When it gets dark, use a flashlight to make different shadow puppets. Before bedtime, watch an adventure movie such as ‘The Lion King’ or ‘The Jungle Book’. To make it eerie, let them watch the ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ TV series.

2. Indoor Games

Indoor game is not only restricted to video or computer games. There are many other indoor games which you can play with your kids. Scrabble, Monopoly, Jenga, and Uno, there are many more to be mentioned. Other than that, you may unleash your inner child by playing the game such as hopscotch and ‘Snakes & Ladders’ – just in your living room. Then, down to the memory lane, introduce your kids to the Malaysian’s traditional games like congkak and batu seremban.

3. Dancing Star

Although not everyone is as talented as a professional dancer, with the emergence of the TikTok app, now everyone can dance! All you need to do is just to create a simple dance moves, record the dance video, and share it with your family and friends. This is the time for you to get together in a fun and extraordinary ways. Through this activity, you can also discover the hidden talent in you and your kids. Try out this new hobby as a new normal. There are a lot of different types of dance that you can choose from, be it modern, K-Pop, Bollywood, or even cultural dance. Just have fun, do not be shy! 4. Virtual Tour

Kids are more vulnerable to infections as compared to adults. Even after the conditional MCO is over, if you ever wish to take them out for a sight-seeing, please think twice. At home, you can still bring them to the outside world virtually by watching educational channels. To the zoo, just turn on the National Geographic or Discovery Channel. To the museum, just switch to the History Channel. Soon, when the situation gets better, you may plan to have a fantastic journey together.

5. Cook & Dine

I believe, MCO has turned many into Master Chefs. Then, why not we take this opportunity to help our kids develop some new skills through cooking? This is also one of the ways to distract them from their cell phones, tablets, or other electronic gadgets. Cooking is indeed a fun and creative activity. We can decorate our food and plate them as to how we want it to be. Then, if you want to make it more interesting, host a fine-dining experience for your kids. During and after the pandemic, home is still the safest place to be. So, with these five home-based holidays ideas, there should be no more excuses to go out. These ideas may be repeated weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. To make it exclusive for each session, you may apply a different theme – just to change the surrounding. This is because, sometimes, a change in scenery is all the boost needed. Home sweet home!
