3 tips for you to grant a stress-free holiday trip with your kids:

For many kids, drinking a glass of milk is one of the best ways to get the calcium source, but for some, it means to get the unpleasant stomach cramps or diarrhea. These kids who have stomach discomfort after taking dairy product might have lactose intolerance – a common digestive problem where the body is unable to breakdown and digest lactose, which is a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products.

What are the symptoms of lactose intolerance? [1]

The severity of symptoms depends on the amount of lactose consumed; the number of symptoms increases with the greater amount of lactose. These symptoms can occur within minutes to hours after drinking milk or eating dairy products:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Bloating
  • Gas

Tips for managing lactose intolerance

Tips  Reason

Eat foods that contain lactose in combination with other foods or spread them out over the day, rather than eating a large amount at once.

Most people with lactose intolerance can handle small amounts of lactose, such as a glass of milk, which contains 8–10 grams of lactose.[1]
Take yogurt as one of the dairy sources. The yogurt has slower transit time in the intestine that allows the bacterial (known as lactase) to assist in lactose digestion.[2]
Take probiotic to improve the intestinal tolerability. Some strain of probiotics can produce a certain amount of lactase that can break down lactose in milk.[3,4]
Take lactosefree milk There are delicious milk alternatives such as almond milk and soy milk. You can also look for milk products that  labelled “lactose-free”

Lactose intolerance kid may also opt for other milk products such as soy, rice, almond, or even hemp milk. However, if looking for a source of calcium and vitamin D, animal dairies product serves the best. All in all, give it a try on the tips above to reduce the signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance.
