Milk thistle and dandelion - Wonderful liver tonic for a sluggish liver

Introduction

Did you know? The liver has more than 500 chemical functions in your body. One of its main functions includes detoxifying your blood. As the liver plays an important role in detoxification, we need to maintain our liver health by having a healthy diet, exercising and supplementing with the right liver tonics!

Signs of an overloaded liver:

  • Sluggish fat digestion
  • Dark circles and puffy eye bags
  • Skin blemishes
  • Indigestion
  • Poor bowel movement
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Bad breath or offensive body odour

Milk thistle is traditionally used for liver disorders. This herb contains silymarin, which is an antioxidant to protect the liver by preventing toxins from entering the liver cells and by stimulating the regenerative ability of the liver. Silymarin also increases the glutathione content of the liver by 35% in healthy subjects. Glutathione is responsible for detoxifying a wide range of chemicals. Increasing the glutathione content of the liver, thus, increases the capacity for detoxification reactions.

Dandelion is another herb highly regarded for its diuretic and blood cleansing capabilities. It increases bile flow, thus enhancing the digestion of fats, fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients as well as the elimination of toxins from the body.

For maintenance of general liver health, opt for the combination of milk thistle standardised extract (silymarin) with dandelion.
